Notes

FILED 1-MAY-03

Colne were home to Weeley in a mid table clash. Both teams are safe from trophy or relegation and in a game which failed to show any style both sides struggled to link any play together. It was Colne that initially exploited slack play with James Monroe and Jimmy Rees working both wings being fed from good work from Joe Lynn and Micky Burle. In the centre of the park Ricky Shields and Mel Nice chased and worked but it was Colne's centre forward Simon Andress that was proving an asset forcing the play upfront. It was through him that Colne took the lead with some great finishing. Weeley to their credit responded and gained a penalty after a bouncy through ball came to defenders hand. A little harsh, but stand in keeper Adam Crofton responded by pulling of a brilliant stop to keep Colne on the lead at halftime.

Manager Robin Bragg was unhappy with the lack of passing coordination, but his talk failed to inspire and Weeley drew level through luck more than skill. Colne responded admirably and when Simon Andress was pulled down in the box the ref failed to respond to the appeal. Colne continued to push, but on a counter-attack the Weeley farward harried down the Colne keeper who in a slightly comical sequence broke the laws of the game in a sequence of ball-hand-ground-foot-hand. Weeley layed off and scored with a good strike from the resultant indirect free kick in the box.

Colne changed it around with appeareances from the 17 year old Chris Rayner and Risky Adamson who were given a chance after promising performances in the reserves. So with a little more pace Colne refused to give up and piled the pressure on, and their battling finally paid off as another fearce drive across the goal was turned in by a hapless defender before Paul Davies could reach it.

So a point for Colne, but their trademark triangle passes were sorely missed this week, and the manager felt they should have got all three points, but really didn't play well enough. Chairman's man of the match went to stand in striker Simon Andress for a battling performance, and a superb four in four goal rate.

Team: Crofton, Lynn, Burle, D Rayner, Andress, Monroe, Nice, Shields, Davies, Robinson, Rees subs C Raynor, Prestney, Adamson.

The Reserves also managed to return from Cornhard with a point. Having been two nil down the reserves regained the advantage with a goal feast from Gary Pearce and two from Ashley Smith, but Cornhard stole the draw with a goal in the dying minutes. This keeps the pressure on for a top three place, nine points behind Glemsford & Cavendish but with FIVE games in hand.

Finally, all at Earls Colne FC wish to congratuate Halstead Town in earning their recent promotion to the Jewson Premier Division and wish them every success next season.

FILED 31-APR-03

After last week’s 9-0 drumming of St.Osyth, manager Robin Bragg felt he didn’t had to worry about over confidence as the quality of Rowhedge was well understood by all his players.

From the off Rowhedge shined and were justified in being favourites for all the points with a show of precise passing and pace, and stuck the first blow with a well-worked game play. They continued to pressure and brought off an excellent saves from Colne’s Tom Konopka, in particular a tipped shot over the bar. Colne to their credit did not buckle and centre pin Ricky Shields worked tirelessly with Tony Robinson (aka Baldrick) keeping Colne fluid in the middle.

But it was the right wing that was producing the most attractive play for Colne, with play stemmed from Micky Burle who commanded the back and was working well with Stuart Evans. Feeding the ball to Rees, he showed exciting pace, control and dexterity as he taunted the Rowhedge defence with twists and turns time and time again until he was inevitably pulled down for a penalty. Burle stepped up and punished Rowhedge for their indiscretion.

Even as the crowd celebrated Rowhedge were alert and sliced through the Colne defence, and when Konopka failed to clear the through ball cleanly, Rowhedge lobbed the defence and despite Burle and Monroe heroic attempts to cover the line Rowhedge resumed the lead.

Colne, despite finding themselves down again, started to rebuild and the defence was able to easily soak up any attack with clever defending utilising the natural pace of Rayner. As Colne were getting closer to equalising and were rattling Rowhedge. Their defence was struggling to cope with Rees as he tore through the left flank, and with forwards Gavin Peters and Stu Prestney weaving their magic opportunities were coming thick and fast. But it was Rees who was causing the most damage; driving forward he split the Rowhedge defence and slotted the ball across the goalmouth where Monroe failed to convert. It was only seconds later when, undeterred, Rees continued cut inside and slotted the ball home for the equaliser just before half time.

Halftime and the crowd had enjoyed some good football. Manager Robin Bragg told his team to tighten the passing and the widen the play to stretch Rowhedge. But it was Rowhedge who came out fighting by were denied by some excellent keeping from Konopka. Robinson and Shields continued to dominate the midfield and regained control and when Colne replaced the Peters with the energetic Mel Nice returning from injury further chances came. Rees continued to outstrip and dance around his markers but failed to capitalise further. When Prestney pulled up with a calf injury he was replaced by Stuart Bragg who further preoccupied the Rowhedge defence. With a last throw of the dice Colne replaced Paul Davies by the giant presence of Simon Andress who came very close with an awesome shot only denied by a great save. The final whistle brought a well-earned point for Colne against one of the top sides in the premier league after a excellent game of football. This was surprising Colne’s first draw of the season.

TEAM: Konopka, Burle, Evans, Rayner, Robinson, Shields, Nice, Peters, Davies, Prestney, Rees Subs Bragg, Andress, Monroe

A good result for the reserves who grabbed an away point from Glemsford and Cavendish. There were chances galore but either side failed to capitalise on them so shared the points. Goods news is that skipper Danny Attree should be available soon for selection again after his operation.

FILED 24-MAR-03

In glorious sunshine Colne were matched to play old foes St.Osyth in a stereo typical six pointer. Colne began the day tenth in the premier league with St.Osyth only 3 points behind. But in an awesome display of rapid counter attacks Colne tore into St.Osyth for a breath taking goal glut 9-0 win, leaving their management scratching their heads and complaining bitterly about the ref. Their problems started after Colne were awarded a penalty and the defender walked when the the ref objected to being likened to a lower part of the female anatomy. Appropriately it was skipper Micky Burle who opened the score sheet and was quickly joined by Paul Davies with an impressive flying header.
The sturdy Colne back four easily absorbed the St.Osyth pressure with excellent display from Stuart Evans, Simon Andress, Jimmy Monroe and David Rayner. Minutes later Jimmy Rees was dancing through the box when he was shoved off the ball and Burle stepped up for his second of the day.
Gavin Peters scored minutes minutes later. Then Colne gained a free kick just outside the box which Tony Robinson thundered home for the sixth.

Halftime brought a rest bite for St.Osyth, but wasted effort bending the ref's ear. Colne's manager Robin Bragg focused and urged his team to keep it tight, and despite the pressure in the second half Tom Konopka kept a clean sheet. Robin swapped things around and brought on Nick Baddou to put some pace up front, and Stuart Bragg to deliver service.

This aroused Colne and with great interaction from Ricky Shields and Micky Burle released Baddou whose shot bend round the keeper for a glorious goal. Flushed with enthusiasm Peters pressed on and scored his second. The final goal typified Colne effort as Bragg stole the ball from a defender and fed the ball to Tony Robinson whose fierce shot was only parried and Nick Baddou showed great ability by clipping the ball over the lounging keeper into the net for nine. St.Osyth had played well but couldnt handle Colne and to their credit were not discouraged despite the awesome scoreline. After the game, spirits in the Colne camp were naturally high after taking all the points and substantially improving their goal difference.
Team: Knopoka, Rayner, Burle, Andress, Evans, Peters, Monroe, Shields, Davies, Robinson, Rees, subs: Baddou, Bragg and Goodwin.
The reserves also had an excellent result winning 4-3 away at Foxash Social with two goals from Gary Pearce and Ashley Smith. Manager Kevin Chapman was very impressed with his teams performance as they continue to pull themselves up the league.

West Bergolt 1 Earls Colne 2

Colne had the daunting prospect of visiting league runaways Bergholt, three days after an energy sapping visit to Stanway who had included six players who then featured in the first team fixture at Melford!! Undetered manager Robin Braggasked again for the same committment, and boy did the Colne boys give it to him. Heads didnt drop after Bergholt took the lead just after a minute through Mort. Gavin Peters ran down the keeper, dispossessing him for Stuart Prestney to tuck away the loss ball on 15 minutes. For the equaliser Paul Davies later shot at the keeper Bethell, then Peters hit a left foot drive to be cleared off of the line. Just before half-time Stuart Prestney had a free kick whcih was safetly held.

Mark Farthing always posed a handful for Colne's Stuart Evans for any set piece, but he coped with it well and managed to contain the threat superbly. Prmoted David Rayner had a great debuy for the first team along side the confident Micky Burle. Paul Davies hit a great drive onto the crossbar after a flick on from Gavin Peters in the second period.Rees went close too, this time tipped round the corner. Then after a cross from Burle, Jimmy Rees hit a delightful volley past Bethall for 2-1. This didnt stop Colne, they kept probing, Robinson and Whitnell were added for fresh legs, and Top Knopoka pulled off a fatastic save to top around a shot from Farthing. Colne held firm for what was a tremendous vitorym that now gives them four victories from their last five league outingsm ans the praise could not of been any hogher from their manager.

A depleted reserves were entertaining Gas Rec in the cup. Gas lost a man in the first two minutes after a heated wording with the ref. Colne took the lead, but Gas draw level and took the lead through a penalty.

But the reserves showed excellent spirit to pull the result back to 3-2, but it was too late, Good luck to Gas in the next round.

Earls Colne Res 4 Dedham Old Boys 1

This was a typical six pointer the reserves met Dedham who were three points ahead having played five games. The wind whipped up over pitch as the game kicked off, but it was Dedham who stuck first against the run of play to take the lead after 20 minutes. The response from Colne came just before the half time whistle when top scorer Gary Pearce headed a looping ball which caught on the wind and over the keeper to equalise. Halftime and manager Kevin Chapman told his team to release the ball earlier and get it wide to Ashley Smith and Ricky Adamson who would use their pace to take the game to Dedham.

Second half and Colne started promisingly and tighten up their play considerably. At 60 minutes, Luke Whitnjust after aell picked the ball up and slotted a delightful ball through to Gary Pearce who walloped it home to give Colne the lead. Ten minutes later Stuart Bragg shot from outside the 18 yard box and showing great control and finished with a superb long range shot, then a few minutes later Ashley Smith danced past several defenders before being grounded. He took the subsequent penalty and put Colne 4-1 up. After the final whistle manager Kevin Chapman was pleased with the result considering how sloppy Colne's play had been at times, but when they were on song they were more like the team he and the supporters knew and loved. Colne move up one spot.

The first team were away to Rowhedge in the KO Cup but were outclassed and went down 5-1. The club also wants to wish the reserves skipper Danny Attree every luck with his hernia operation this week, and hopes for a speedy recovery, he should hurry back as the team are missing him already.

As the season moves on, its time to push on the Border Premier Division manager Robin Bragg urged his players for victory against old foes Kelvedon Social that would ensure that Colne moved ahead of Harwich and Oakley, leaving Mistley above in their sights three points ahead, but having played five games more.

The game started with a dream start and within 10 minutes time slick Jimmy Rees had bagged a brace of goals to put Colne two up. But Colne not for the first time this season relaxed, and let Kelvedon back in, and they were lucky to remain with a clean sheet at half time, partly thanks to some good keeping from keeper Tom Knopoka. Although Robin Bragg relayed his concerns on the team, they came out al little sleepy from the break and Kelvedon scored within seconds of the restart.

Colne responded as Joe Lynn came very close was a 30 yard screamer although in the crowd his dad Tony claimed it was not a bad effort off of his shin pad! Stuart Bragg and Ricky Shields had a subdued but had a solid game keeping the left hand side quiet.

But Colne battled on and with James Goodwin barking orders from the back and Simon Andress completely some clever defending it was looking very solid. Despite heavy challenges from both sides, Colne's Micky Burle and Tony Robinson had good influences on the game. Colne made two substitutions, the first Jimmy Monroe worked tirelessly to keep the right hand side of the Kelvedon formation quiet, and latched onto a cross to put Colne ahead 3-1. The second substitute Stuart Evans was given a red card after raising an elbow.

Colne battled on with ten men and kept a tight shape, and managed to easy ride the storm from Kelvedon who seemed to be struggling for squad as a succession of older subs were used off of the bench. So three points for Colne, moving them into ninth place.

The reserves also gained a point at Kelvedon Reserves to keep 11th spot. Kelvedon took an early lead, although Colne missed plenty of opportunities and only misses by Pearce, Woos and Smith denied Colne any success.

Kelvedon started the second half in whirlwind fashion but was constantly denied by a spectacular set of saves from Colne keeper Eric Wilson. With an inspirational change Kevin Chapman had Ashley Smith wide, and he danced past several Kelvedon players before laying it off to Smith who finished it with superb efficiency. Colne hung on as Kelvedon attacked wave after wave by held strong for the final whistle. After the game manager Kevin Chapman said he was very happy with a point as Kelvedon was the best side they had played in the league.

Stuart Prestney has played 11 seasons for Colne and celebrated passing his 200th goal by sinking Harwich with a glorious hattrick showing he isnt fading any! The first team were entertaining Harwich and Parkestone at home. In the last few weeks the results hadnt been going right despute some good performances, but it was Prestney who opened the scoring against a tough Harwich side with a break and a delightful lob. Despite pressure from Harwich Prestney scores again with a scorcher drive. Every time Colne seemed to pull away Harwich scored and equalised. Colne were spoiled by some quality crosses into the box from Mel Nice and Jimmy Rees, while the midfield was masterly controlled by Ricky Shields. But there was an headbutting incident seen by all but the ref, and also flagged by the club linesman but no action could be taken. If the linesman had been an official the Harwich boy would of walked but instead Colne's Stuart Bragg was carried off. The game opened up after the incident but Colne kept their composure and it was Stuart Prestney who slotted home the winning goal and take all 3 vital points moving Colne up the table away from the bottom three. A great exciting game for all that watched.

The reserves were away to a tough Lawford side, but with goals from Monroe and Smith an two from Pearce they brought all the points home with a 4-1 victory. The club would really like to praise Stowmarket for their excellent hospitality last week, which was second to none. A tribute to good old fashioned hospitality.

Essex Junior Cup Area Final
Earls Colne Reserves 0 Burnham Rovers 1

A good crowd were at the Rec to see the eagerly anticipated final against Burnham Rovers finally take place after last week's bad weather. Colne Reserves were fielding a good side, bolstered when captian Danny Attree was announced fit earlier in the day. Burnham came as a well organised outfit, and found the slightly heavy going not quite to their taste. Despite this they played a strong game, catching the Colne forwards regularly in their offside trap. At the back a solid Stu Evans contained the Burnham attack, and despite showing full commitment a lack of any passing game meant Colne were unable to capitalise on their domination. Even when Gary Pearce finally found the net, it was deemed to be offside. Meanwhile Colnes Luke Whitnell shone out as he chased and harried constantly for the ball. Halftime and Colne still looked good for the win, and after the restart Colne started to compile their attacks with more purpose. But it was obvious that the words 'get stuck in' had been used in the Burnham changing room, as Colne found themselves with little time on the ball before a challenge. Colne's hopes were bolstered further when in a pair of sickening tackles only minutes apart meant an early shower for the Burnham right winger.
Colne failed to capitalise on the extra man, pumping to ball into crowded areas of the pitch instead of using their passing skills and making Burnham run more. While manager Kevin Chapman tried to rally the players from their compliency, Burnham attacked. From a corner the ball was fired into the Colne net 0-1 to Burnham. For the next 25 minutes Colne tried to pull the game back; James Goodwin and Gary Pearce piled forward without success; but Colnes back four were tired and unable to support the forward runners. Jimmy Monroe brought a freshness to the left wing and provided several good chances, and Jimmy George tried to add some passion into his play; only to be booked for rash tackles. In the last desperate seconds Colne were awarded a corner, with everyone including the goalie in the box, a chance went begging; another corner. As the ball swept in, it was was scrambled into the net for the equaliser; but the Burnham supporters were already cheering as the ref had blown the end the game whilst the ball was in the air. Colne heads dropped, they had been beaten by ten men with passion; but perhaps a lesson was learnt. So no trophy for the Colne Reserves, and Burnham go forward to meet the other Area winners. The club wishes them every success in representing the Area.

Earls Colne 2 Sudbury AFT Res 4

There was a good home crowd at the Rec enjoying the winter sun. Colne started brightly enough although Sudbury were worthy adversaries showing the advantage of being reserves to team in the Ryman league. In a well fought first half the ball clipped the woodwork several times. But Tom Knopoka kept Colne on the game with some outstanding keeping for the home side, yet it was Colne who broke the deadlock when Sudbury brought down an attack which presented Colne with a penalty and a ten man opposition. Stuart Prestney slotted the ball home to give Colne the lead. After the break Sudbury came out like ten wounded tigers and managed to score from a solid build up. Colne were dumbfounded, it was more like playing 13 men than ten, but Stuart Prestney picked the ball up from the half way line and shot from 30 yards into the far corner to put Colne ahead.
Sudbury refused to give up but excellent defensive work from Mel Nice with support from Joe Lyne and Simon Andress kept them at bay. But Sudbury took the initiative and scored again to level. Then in a blink of an eye 10 man Sudbury scored again taking the lead. Throwing caution to the wind Colne swapped things but to no avail, and with a few minutes to go, pushing on too far to try and rescue a point Sudbury caught Colne again to make it a flattering 2-4 result. After the game Colne manager Robin Bragg was bitterly disappointed, and said he would have been disappointed even with a draw. But Sudbury showed themselves as the good side they are even when down to ten men, Colne have played all the good sides recently and had chances against them all, but must learn to convert these chances into wins. Disappointing result and no points for Colne.

Next week at the Rec, Colne Reserves play Burnham Rovers in the Essex Junior Cup Area Final at 2.30pm. Come and support Earls Colne, a good crowd will be appreciated.

Essex Junior Cup – Area Semi-final

It is an exciting time at the club, the reserves were playing in semi-final of the Essex Junior Cup. The reserves are no strangers to good cups run, it was just over a year ago when they lost in the Amos Cup final. The tie was away to old friends and foes St.Osyths on a wet, heavy, clumpy, sticky; a typical January pitch.
Before the game manager Kevin Chapman urged his players to take the game to St.Osyth as befits any good cup-tie. From the off his players stuck to the task, and St.Osyth found themselves chasing the game. In many ways they fell for Colne’s game plan. Colne struck first with a fantastic goal from Gary Pearce, who minutes later rounded the keeper to slot home a second. St.Osyth pushed on to try and reply but Oli Crocker hit St.Osyth for three with a sucker punch. The home side now staggered on, but Colne were in full flow and when a fourth was bundled over the line in a goalmouth scramble the home sides heads went down. Despite strong feedback from the St.Osyth bench and putting five up front for the last 20 minutes the home side looked outclassed. Even when Colne conceded a late goal the tie never looked lost.
After the game manager Kevin Chapman, named the whole side when asked for his man of the match. He was so pleased with their commitment and hunger for the result and had really stuck to their task. He thought the best team had won, he was very proud. The regional final is at Earls Colne on February 1st against Burnham Ramblers. Chairman Mark Ambrose said it was great that the reserves had done so well getting into the regional final, it shows the depth of talent at the club, and urged everyone to come and give the team as much support as possible.

Hedinghams United 1

With a definite January bite in the air on a cold but sunny afternoon, Colne Reserves entertained top of the table Hedinghams Utd. The pitch at the Rec was again in glorious condition, thanks to Colne Valley Golf Club. With most other games cancelled in the area a good crowd turned out to watch what proved to be an entertaining game. Before the kickoff Colne fans were heartened by the news that Smith and Munro returned to the bench after returning from a long periods of injury, whilst Prestney and Shields started their first game for 5 weeks.

Colne looked anything but rusty as they took an early lead after just 5 minutes, when Prestney turned his man in the box and crossed to Pearce who finished with a neat volley at the near post. Colne continued in the same vein when Prestney shot over the bar a few minutes later after good work with Whitnell. Hedingham lost Cannon after 26 minutes which didn’t help their cause, and on 40 minutes Evans broke from the back to release Pearce, although his shot was parried, Prestney followed up to put Colne two up. Showing the spirit of league leaders, Hedingham replied on 43 minutes with a lovely chip that looped over keeper Blackwell for 2-1. But even then it was not over for the half, with Pearce again the provider, this time for a Whitnell volley, and then, incredibly right on the half time whistle Colne went 4-1 up when a crafty Adamson cutting in, slotted in a low cross which was converted by efficiently by Prestney.

Smith replaced the injured Crocker at half time, and Attree and Shields were creating lots of attacks while Rayner covered well at the back. Despite Hedingham having a couple of early chances, Colne’s fifth came when Prestney anticipated a clever flick from Pearce. He then rounded the keeper to complete his hat trick. Munrow then putting him in again to slot home number 6 and finish off a great advert of good local football, and credit must also go to referee Wendy Townsend for a competent display justifying her decision to go ahead with the game. After the game manager Kevin Blackwell spoke proudly of his team’s performance especially after such a long break. The perfect start for 2003.

Stubborn Colne outclassed

Earls Colne 0 – West Bergolt 3

Colne had a tough match against league leaders West Bergholt. It was a fast and furious game showing Border league at its best. But despite the best efforts Colne’s forwards Paul Davies and Stuart Bragg was not getting many chances as the visitors showed their class. But it was Gavin Peters who had the best chance for Colne failing to capitialise on a good chance from a few yards out.

Bergolt were very impressive and Colne battled to keep the levels score until half time. Micky Burle had to work very hard as the attacks came streaming in from right. Jimmy Rees was kept busy as the additional man came through, but Colne keeper Tom Konopka had a stormer in denying Bergolt.

But after half time, the Colne continued to battle and held out for 73 minutes even coming close from counter attacks. But Bergholt made the pressure tell and after some slack marking Colne was punished with a goal from Shriver. As Colne pushed to get a grip on the game Bergholt continued to exploit to right hand side and found success again. As the fog swirled in, Colne continued to be stretched as the league leaders punished Colne with a third. The final whistle brought relief but also a score line which flattered West Bergholt and didn’t reflect Colne’s hard work for the majority of the game. Colne’s man of the match was keeper Tom Konopka.

Both teams had chances but it was a break down the right with Ricky Shield commanding the midfield, releasing the ball to Luke Whitnall who sprang the offside trap to release Ricky Adamson. He whipped the ball across and outside the box Gary volleyed the ball powerfully tightly into the top right hand corner.
Mistley pushed on, but Colne were able to exploit the new space and Danny Attree and Oli Crocker pushed on. Gary Pearce rested his hamstring and was replaced by Jimmy George. Colne hit Mistley on the counter attack; Ricky Shields put the ball away to give Colne more of a cushion 3-1. Now Mistley had to pushed on in order to get Colne at least into extra time, but with Tristram Woods working well, Mistley made a rash tackle to give the home side a penalty. Supersub Del converted the penalty to confirm Colne a place in the fourth round. Chairman’s man of the match was Gary Pearce, although Ricky Shields midfield class shone through. After the game manager Kevin Blackwell thought that David Reiner deserved a big mention.

Things are ticking over nicely at the club, the pitch is excellent thanks to Stuart Prestney, and the only annoyance has been a mis-editing of last weeks match report in the local rag which upset and confused some players and supporters. Its a shame because a lot of effort goes into writing these; its a good job we can rely on Ian Sale at the Green'un for the accuracy!

In the last few weeks Earls Colne have been enjoying a revival with good solid performances and more importantly, victories under their belts. Last week the Reserves were at home to Birch United in the fourth round of the Essex Junior Cup. Although the visitors were eager to impress they made little impression as Colne showed their class and dominated the game. Centrally Danny Attree and Stuart Prestney formed the focal pivot point, while Ricky Adamson exploited the left flank with support from Luke Whitnall. But despite the upper hand Colne came in a half time scoreless, lucky not to be a goal down after a ferocious Birch shot was deflected looping over the keeper’s head but on to the top netting of the Colne goal.

After the break Colne continued to push and Birch resisted resiliently with good solid tackles, but Colne were getting closer. The whole team were playing as a good unit, Curtis O’Brien keeping it tight at the back. Despite the control, Colne’s Gary Pearce and Oli Crocker both came close, and Steve Chapin was constantly trying to exploit the left wing. Manager Kevin Chapman tried to change things as there was always a danger that Birch will sneak one, so Chapin was replaced by Del Harrington. But despite Birch hitting the woodwork the match remained scoreless.

So into extra time, and with darkness falling Colne took the game by the scruff of the neck. Straight from the off, Ricky Adamson pounded down the wing crossing to Stuart Prestney who met it with a solid header to put Colne ahead. Birch to their credit responded, but Colne keeper Rob Tanner pulled off an outstanding save and was saved by the wood work on the second attempt. The second half of extra time Colne held their ground, but playing a smoother same now Oli Crocker popped up and scored after a selfless pass from Stuart Prestney who had done all the work. Final whistle and Colne go through to meet through to meet St.Osyth in the next round.

It was very refreshing to have the game was hosted by a lady ref Wendy Townsend who had no problem keeping control of the game with firm refereeing with a certain amount of humour. Very good.

After four straight defeats Earls Colne played host to old friends and rivals St.Osyths in the Knockout cup. The play in the first half was deadlocked with the ball hardly touching the deck as both teams play keepie uppie, header volley and the crowd were baying hav'it continually! There were few chances in the first half, Colne keeper Tom Knopka had the ball slip dangerously through his hands at one stage, but luckily was able to recover from that Teflon moment. No one had enough time on the ball, and St.Osyth were closing down the spaces; with heavy markers on flying wingers Ashley Smith and Jimmy Reese. Colne came close but were denied by the post; and St.Oysth equally were denied by the feline dexterity of Tom Knopka.

Half time and manager Robin Bragg told his players to keep the ball down and play their usual passing game with their trademark triangles. More importantly was to keep their heads as things were bound to get emotional. He was not wrong, with Colne playing more of a passing game the visitors became a little frustrated. As Colne's Jimmy Reese was clobbered after the ball had gone a St. Osyth player left for an early shower. Colne were starting to dominate and exploited the extra man well; a great ball from Tony Robinson found Jimmy Reese on the left who drove forward a whipped in a cross that found the far top corner over the despairing Seaman-like keeper.
Unfortunately in typical fashion, Colne relaxed and St.Osyth hit back immediately 1-1. The brilliant crowd, mainly from the Drum and Castle began to really get behind Colne, and the home team responded. Chances fell to Paul Davies, who despite carrying a foot injury was unlucky not to score. Full time and still no more goals, the match went into extra time.

Simon Andress had to battle most of the match, and although not quite at fighting weight he showed a great amount of flair to counter his lack of match fitness, it looks like he will soon be back on full song. But St.Osyth shot themselves in the foot again when another rash tackle left them with 9 players, and Colne really started to stroke the ball around. The visitors were lucky not to lose another player when only getting a yellow card to kicking a fallen player after the whistle had gone. St. Osyth held out for the first extra 15 mins before Ricky Shields scored a cracker to take the lead. Manager Robin Bragg said it was great to see Ricky get on the score sheet as he is normally so caught up in the midfield battles. Colne had many more chances, with veteran sub Gavin Peters missing a sitter from 2 yards. To his credit, he ran the complete length of the pitch to clear the ball off of the line on the counter attack just before the final whistle. There's life in those old legs yet!

The reserves had a tough league game away to Boxted where they came back with all points for their first league win.. Although battered and bruised, goals from Oli Crocker, two from Gary Pearce, Glen Lesiak, and Ricky Adamson brought victory 4-2. Manager Kevin Chapman was impressed by the performance of the whole team, with fantastic performances by Danny Attree, who does so week in and week out, goalie Sam Blackwell had an outstanding game, as did Jimmy Monroe before having to limp off with a dead leg. But man of match is Ricky Adamson; keep up the great work.

Stanway looked very bright and were full of running and the Colne back four had their work cut out. But for the first 45 mins Colne were not in the game, seeming second to every ball, losing out on 50:50 challenges, it didn’t help Colne were having an off day. Stanway struck when, from one of several long throwers, a penetrating throw-in was met by a cracking header, where the forward beat Stuart Evans and James Goodwin to score. The second goal was a sloppy clearance from the Colne defence which deflected to Halstead lad Mathew Fielding who clinically slotted the ball home.
At half time, manager Robin Bragg read the riot act as he had just seen the worst performance in years; with several players off tune nothing was going right. He told the players pick up and have a go, with more effort, more passing.
The players responded in the second half, but the game was still ebbing further away from Colne. After an inspired substitution vet striker Gavin Peters was put in midfield with licence to help out at the back. The response was immediate; Stanway found they had less time on the ball as Gavin ran his heart out like a ferret on steroids. But with Stanway stuck in cruise mode, Colne started exploiting the pace of Ashley Smith and Jimmy Reeses to greater extent. Ashley is of compact build and was marked, very efficiently by a much larger defender although 50:50 balls looked more like 80:20 in the defenders favour. But Ashley switched sides with Jimmy and found slightly more room. In a surging run two defenders dissected him, at best clumsily and Colne had a penalty. Micky Burle thundered the ball home for 2-1. But it was too late for Colne and the final whistle came all too soon, much it was seen to the relieve of the Stanway crew.
So no points for Robin Bragg’s team, after the he said “We were beaten by a much better side, the strongest I’ve seen in the league, and considering that they had some players called up to the first team they will be frightening on full strength. We had several players who were completely off of their game today, something we cannot afford against such an opponent. But we’ll be back!”

The reserves were away to Glemsford and Cavendish in the first round of the Tommy Thomson Cup. After an eventless first half, Colne started to really play as a solid unit and with goals from Danny Attree, Tony Robinson, Gary Pearce and two from Steve Chapman. It has to be noted that keeper John Drew had a great game and is starting to really show his true form. Manager Kevin Chapman said after the game that the reserves are getting stronger every week, all played well and very solid. As long as the players can keep fit we should enjoy a good season.

As many of the border league know, we enjoy a lovely flat playing surface which promotes a nice passing game, but as manager Robin Bragg pointed out before the game, in order to get any accolades this year Colne will have to perform whatever the surface, and at Weeley the uneven surface was going to be a challenge. From the start good football was thwarted and both teams had to resort to aimless use of the ball rather than risk a mistake.

After 20 minutes Weeley scored as a result of Tom Knopka, the Colne keeper failed to clear what appeared a harmless cross, resulting in an easy tap in for Neil Martin to flatter the home side. In a bright 15 min spell at the end of the half, Colne dominated affairs but failed to score in the closing stages. Last week’s hero Stuart Bragg cleverly beat the keeper only to spurn the empty inviting net hitting the post. Then only a minute later Tosh Fenwick saw his effort denied from a corner by an instinctively save.

At half time manager Robin Bragg encouraged Colne to try and play a more meaningful passing game. It started full of promise and Colne were unlucky to not have been awarded two penalties, after Stu Bragg and then Ashley Smith both suffered from rash tackles. But ten minutes into the half Colne were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. Taken by Tosh Fenwick, the Weeley keeper spilled and Stuart Evans mopped up and scored. Sadly minutes later Tosh pulled up with a hamstring problem and had to be substituted, hopefully he will make a quick recovery.

At one-a-piece Colne looked the more dangerous and it was against the run of play, after 35 mins, that an undisputed penalty was awarded against a clumsy tackle converted by Richard Beet making the score 2-1. It was in the last ten minutes saw two clear cut chances squandered by Colne and Weeley were relieved to hear the final whistle and took all the points. After the game manager Robin Bragg was a little disappointed, and thought that Colne deserved at least a point.

The reserves played an exciting game against Dedham Old Boys in the Border Reserve Cup but lost 4-3 to get knocked out.

A spectacular victory for Earls Colne again Felixstowe in the Kent Blaxill Border league. In the run up to the match Felistowe had enjoyed a good start to the season and looked a good robust side. Colne manager Robin Bragg has expected it to be a tough game, but Colne had the perfect start when the visitors failed get started and were severely pushing by Colne.
Quick off the blocks, Stu Prestney pushed forward from the kick off, and found a cross from Micky Burle and which was distpatched to the back of the net within 50 seconds. Felixstowe restarted but were quickly dispossessed by an energetic Ricky Shields. Stu Prestney picked up the ball and surged forward again, and lobbed the hapless keeper for 2-0. Felixstowe were frantically trying to organise their defence, another kickoff, and good running from Jo Lynn and Ashley Smith were tearing them apart on the right. Paul Davies was making intelligent runs and stretching the defence. Good work from Ricky Slields, who released the agile Stu Bragg who put the third goal away in a blink of an eye. Only 10 minutes gone Colne were still pushing and finding only limited resistance. Felixstowe were frantic, and on conceding a corner the Felixstowe keeper objected to the ref in language Chubby Brown would have been embarrassed to use and was soon back in the changing rooms for an early shower. A precise corner from Mel Nice, and Paul Davies met the ball with a bullet header that will probably mean they will have to strengthen the netting next week 4-0. Felixstowe settled but understandably could not react and sweeper James Goodwin and keeper Tom Knopoka were keeping it tight at the back. Second half and Colne had many chances, but the damage was already done and there didn’t seem the same urgency. But Stu Bragg picked the ball up by the halfway line and toyfully glided past the Felistowe midfielders before curling a delightful shot from 25 yards into the top right corner. Colne continued to push, and Paul Davies, who was playing one of his best games shone like a beacon of excellence, met the Mel Nice corner with a header for 6-0.
After the match Robin Bragg was understandable very pleased with Colne’s performance, with the excellent play from Stuart Bragg and Paul Davies. He was also especially pleased with another clean sheet, a third in a row.
So Stu Prestney, Stuart Bragg and Paul Davies each bagged a brace of goals, and the glory was shared, one more and they would have had an hat-trick and the headlines, which just goes to show that Colne is playing more as a single unit rather than for individual glory.

The buzz is back at the club, pre-season training has gone well with a squad good in both quantity and quality. There has been plenty of activity off of the pitch, the club applied for the spare Kent Blaxill Border league slot and the reserves have were accepted into Division 3. The management hopes that the now both sides are in the Border League that the competition between the team places will drive on better football and strive to improve the squad. There are already some good additions to the squad and any place in the first team will have to be earned.
The pre-season games have gone quite well, although we were disappointed, as Micky Cook's Colchester Utd Youth had to withdraw from our annual fixture, due to pressures of forthcoming season and injuries.

Our first team manager Roger Bragg has had to step down from club responsibilities dues to other commitments. We would like to thank him for his excellent and outstanding contribution to the club, way beyond the call of duty. The club wishes him every luck, welcome him back when his circumstances are right for him. The assistant manager, Robin Bragg now assumes the role of first team manager and says that the best way the club can support Roger is to show him that the club can still function to his high standards in his absence.

The first team opened the season away to Little Oakley that brought no points in a 2-1 defeat. This hot weather couldn't have been more different than last year's strong winds that made ball control difficult and the whole match unpredictable. Colne played with a passion in the terrible heat, in this physical but fair match. But Little Oakley are a good side and play a direct style of attack which suits their players, they took the lead when Colne failed to clear an attack and a resulting flick bounced over despairing keeper Tom Konopka. Colne continued to play their trademark short game, with good performance being turned in by Mel Nice playing left midfield, with good showing from Stuart Evans and Tosh Fenwich, although to be fait the whole side was palying well. After half time, Colne continued to chase the game without success. Robin called on promising new signing Ashley Smith as sub, who brought a good injection of pace. He immediately got a result; his fast direct running took him into the box only to be clipped from behind from a thwarted defender. Penalty. Tosh Fenwich stepped up and bought the scores level. As the game progressed it seemed to have draw written all over it, but in the 88th minute, an Oakley freekick, and a failure to deal with the ball let the Oakey centrefarward score to take all the points. After the game manager Robin Bragg said it was a very deflating result but he was very proud of the team's effort and performance despite the result.

The club welcomes Kevin Blackwell, who has eagerly assumed the challenge of the reserves first season in the Border League as reserve team manager. More from him next week. The aim this year must be a solid performance, trying to find our natural league in the league. But there are plenty of good, experienced players in the squad.

Chairman Mark Ambrose says he was very disappointed at last season's discipline record. He reminds the players any bookings for referee abuse are especially pointless, as refs will never change their minds upon appeal anyway. Any the bookings for back chat, off the ball incidents and mindless tackles only cost the players fines. He believes that players have the football skills to still play strong but keep it clean, and by keeping comments for the bar after the game and Earls Colne could try to pick up the Fair Play cup this year. Earls Colne supports the Green'Un's Clean Up Our Game Campaign.
